The Colour Out of Space by H.P. Lovecraft
5.0

I LOVED this short story! My brother (with whom I am close) and my best friend both adore Lovecraft, so I should've known I'd enjoy it as well. This was my first foray into his works, though, and I was so impressed!

It's not so much that he comes up with visualizations that are terrifying as it is that he does a remarkable job of describing the feeling of terror itself, in all the intangible ways. Half of fear is questioning and not understanding. To me, a lot of horror or thriller stories fall short because they give too much detail. If one person creates something that terrifies them and describes it in detail, who's to say *every* other person will find that same thing scary? Instead, Lovecraft seems to excel at describing horrific emotions and psychological ramifications attached to striking, yet vague images and occurrences. Absolute gold. This man is a legend for a reason, and if all horror or thrillers were like this, I'd be even more in love with the genre.
