Hate Mate by Charlotte Byrd
3.0

(I received an ARC for this book)

After Sawyer throws a rich man tantrum in his small town and it goes viral, he reaches out to the best PR for guidance. Unfortunately, he doesn’t recognize who she is. But Willow definitely recognizes him, you don’t forget your high school bully after all. She decides to take the meeting, with every intention to stick it to him! I liked the idea of her getting revenge on her high school bully! She became the better person. She had the upper hand. Except…she gave HIM the upper hand. He got exactly what he wanted, even if she tried to disguise it as revenge just because she could “control” him. I got nearly 50% in before anything really started to unfold. A full conversation took up multiple chapters. There’s twice as much inner dialogue than conversation. And while I’m all for getting into a character's head, repeated information or reiterating information that is already understood takes away from the story. It was obvious Willow is weighed down by the damage Sawyer mentally caused her, and it’s obvious that she’s not willing to let it go. So before it even occurred, the “to lovers” portion of this didn’t seem genuine. While the sex was hot, and there was absolutely an undeniable connection, I didn’t like that it was used as a fix all. This wasn’t a miscommunication or he was a bad guy to someone else. Sawyer tortured her, for years. He destroyed her self confidence, her mental health. And that’s just not something I can look past.
