Speak is a YA novel that follows Melinda, a student who is starting her first year of high school. During the summer break before entering high school, Melinda was raped by an upperclassman. Ever since, and throughout the duration of the novel, Melinda has been trying to come to terms with what happened to her. She sees friends fall away from her and her grades slip. She doesn’t talk to anyone about what happened to her because she knows no one would understand.

KEY POINTS:
* Melinda's character was strongly developed - felt like a real person who you were walking alongside with. Her pain is real.
* forces you to see just how impactful rape can be on a person - it's not something to be taken lightly. It can destroy you.
* descriptions are written so vividly & are described in such a distinct way that it's easy to visualise in your head what's going on. The story flows as though it were really happening in front of you.
* alongside rape, it touches on issues such as friendships, family issues, mental health & abuse.

Speak isn't just about rape. It's about consent. It's about mental health. It's about feeling trapped and alone. It teaches to treat others with respect and understanding as you never really know what is going on behind closed doors. This is a highly powerful book that I think everyone should read, no matter what your age or gender. Books like these can help educate our children at crucial times in their lives about rape and how it is unacceptable, no matter what. If more children had access to eye-opening books like this, then hopefully one day rape will be abolished.
