A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

5.0

I reserve my full five stars for really exceptional books, and this qualifies. Quite simply, it's a very well written, excellent story about interesting, multi-dimensional characters. None of the plot points (I don't want to call them "twists," but some of them are a little twisty) felt forced or unrealistic, and the overall impression really is, in a way, miraculous. There were a number of times in the story that I didn't quite like Owen, but after finishing it, he makes so much more sense. It's really just a great book. I finished it about three hours ago and thinking about it now makes me tear up (again). Read it if you haven't (though I think that most people have--I'm way behind the curve on this one), and maybe re-read it if you haven't read it in a while. On a side note, the narrator for this audiobook did a terrific job. He nailed a perfect Owen voice that never got irritating, and it very easily could have in the hands of a lesser reader.
