Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram

5.0

At first I really didn’t know how to feel about this book. I had been hyping myself up to read it for months and when I started listening it kind of drug on with tea and Star Trek references and exposition. But it didn’t take long for the story to pick up and for me to be fully invested.
The family dynamics are such a huge part of “Darius the Great” and definitely my favorite aspect of the book. Darius and his father especially had such an interesting relationship because they collided so much. The themes of depression and cultural dissonance in Darius’ identity as a Persian American were also super thoughtful. In some ways this book reminded me of “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” in that it deals a lot with cultural differences and the feeling of not being close enough to your heritage.
I would love if Khorram would make this into a series, as I want to see more of Darius and Sohrab, but if not then this book stands alone perfectly.
