This was such a powerful genre bending story. Fantasy, horror, YA, LGBTQIA, it excels in all genres. Regardless of the utopia esque version of Lucille  that Jam and Redemption live in, the scars of trauma are present for all to see. A great reminder that we should never forget our history and past if we want to continue to grow and right the wrongs of our predecessors. Akwaeke Emezi is a visionary; their ability to perfectly meld beautiful imagery and colloquialism with awful social issues is unmatched. I need to read my backlist of their books in 2024.
