The Gospel of Loki
by Joanne M. Harris
Unfortunately, this is one of my least favorite books that I’ve ever read. While I love Joanne Harris as an author and storyteller, I was truly forcing myself to make it through this book. I’m not enthralled by mythology in general. But this book was just so depressing and flat. The hero of the book, Loki, as the title suggests, is the epitome of anti-hero. Added to that, none of the other characters have all that much to respect or be drawn to. The book is full of foreshadowing, all of which says over and over that things are going to turn out badly. And the vocabulary Harris chooses to use for Loki’s perspective makes it sound like he’s a California beach dweller in the 21st century. This book breaks the tread that I’ve enjoyed everything written by Harris.
