The Book of Accidents by Chuck Wendig

3.0

There is a good horror/sci-fi story here but it’s so long winded; so much filler. Edit out 150 pages and you’d have a fun gripping read. Good enough that I wanted to know the ending but felt like I was dragged towards it. “I need this book to end” isn’t a good place to be. I really didn’t want to give up on it as Wendig can be a good writer with a great imagination…but this desperately clutches for metaphors where none were needed. So many sentences could be halved with no loss of meaning. And then he’d drop in the most bizarre words for some very obvious things; like he’s saying “Look! I am a writer…I know so many words” but each time he did it he strangled the life out of a sentence. Just because you’re a bestseller doesn’t mean the publishing editors should take a hands-off easy way out. Clunky.
