Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky
4.0

This novel is very much a stream of consciousness from the mind of an insane person. Do recommend, if that sounds fun to you. It’s impressive how the author is mot present; you as the reader are very much just in this one character’s mind. Sometimes the author will pipe up (breaking the fourth wall style) to say something along the lines of “for the next few days our hero [meaning main character] lied quite still with nothing on his mind whatsoever” and then plug the readers right back into this lunatic’s deep thoughts. The “hero” often contradicts himself, and at times there is no way to know which side he landed on. Rather we just learn that he feels two strong opposites but we are aware of his indecisiveness and refusal to say anything with conviction.
