Wild Awake
by Hilary T. Smith
Compelling protagonist and incredibly well written, but the choices the main character (and her parents!!) makes are cringe-worthy. Still, you can't help but root for Kiri and Skunk, even if they aren't the typical teens in contemporary YA. It's not an "issues" book, per se, but the author tackles mental illness and drug use and first love with intense detail and emotion.
