Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe by Carlos Hernandez
5.0

This was so, so, so great. It had as much humour as the first book, and was also equally sincere and heartwarming and friendship-y, and Sal and Gabi continue to be wonderful characters and wonderful friends, and everyone around them is so supportive and caring; I loved everyone, including the very ethical sentient toilet.

I also so, so appreciate that we have a boy and a girl being friends without any romance between them whatsoever, and that Sal doesn't care one bit about romance in general (at one point Gabi says about Sal, "If you were any more aro, I'd shoot you out of a bow", which made my aromantic self giggle). Plus, I always love seeing kids with chronic illnesses in books, as I used to be one myself (the illness is still here; the kidness not so much, ha) and longed to see kids like myself in books.

This is easily one of my favourite books of the year, just like the first one was last year, and I very much hope that there will be a third book.
