The Return of the King
by J.R.R. Tolkien
What a finish to a classic trilogy. I got the sense that throughout all three books, the richness of company, song, and food gets stripped away until we are left alone with the tired and bedraggled hobbits using their last strength to destroy the ring. It is a war of attrition held at by only by ragged hope. In modern fiction, I feel like we don't get to spend time with the characters after the big thing has been won and the horns have played. But we go beyond the victory, the weddings, and the return journey until we have rediscovered the coziness of the shire. Grab some pipe weed and go on an adventure!
