The Poppy War
by R.F. Kuang
adventurous
dark
tense
medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven:
A mix
Strong character development:
Complicated
Loveable characters:
Complicated
Diverse cast of characters:
Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus:
Yes
Not the most perfect in terms of plot and pacing, but extremely engaging and discussion starting regarding the main character and the history surrounding the event. R.F Kuang is extremely talented, spent time to insert historical context in the book - which is sometimes overbearing - that introduces readers to the brutality of war and events in history.
With authors like SJM and Yarrows being praised for their "life changing plots" I'm happy to give grace to Kuang's work and her want to discuss corruption through Rin (the mc) and events such as the **** (attack) on Nanking.
Rin starts as an underdog and becomes a character of mixed results, you will either love or loathe her and I love that. Not every MC has to be likeable and I respect Kuang's decision to bring that to light.
Be wary of the pacing, as it fluctuates, and even more careful with the triggers.
