Heartbreaker: The Dorothy Dandridge by William Schoell

5.0

I enjoyed this quick read on the life and tragic end of gorgeous Dorothy Dandridge. I've read many books about her and the one written by her and this was a good summary of everything I've read so far. Even though I knew how her story ends I still read the last chapter upset. To go from an Oscar nominated actress to filing for bankruptcy and taking bad movie roles was I'm sure hard to swallow. Add having to place her mentally retarded daughter in an institution when she couldn't afford to pay anyone to watch her anymore and awful relationships with men and her story is a real tear jerker. This is one of those real life stories where I just sit back and fantasize how life could have been different for her. It's no doubt that she did pave the way for many black female actresses, I just wish her story had ended on a happier note. *sigh* Screw Otto and Jack Dennison and Harold and all the other men who made her feel like she wasn't deserving.
