The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
5.0
What a book!!
This book made me laugh, smile, be proud and it also made me cry, fear for the characters and get angry.
The worldbuilding and politics are so well done.
I love how none of the characters are fully good and they all have some dark part of them that they aren’t afraid to show if it means that they can save themselves, their friends and their empire.
The way the war is portrayed with the victories and the defeats, the lives saved, the lives lost and hurt, the fights within the army, the damage and brutality.
They way we see the characters develop and change under the pressure and affects war and their training has on them, it really brings into light the ugliness of war and drug use.
