The Star of Kazan
by Eva Ibbotson
5 stars. I always loved this one. Though the journey to the river sea is better known, the star of kazan is superior in every aspect. The romance is more nuanced, the character growth is less ham handed, and best of all, the central focus is around cooking and descriptions. This is a wonderful book, full of hope and kindness and heroism. Doing the right thing. Few books can be recommended for reading next to someone in a foul mood in bed, but this lightens most burdens and slightly lessens anxious clouds of uncertainty. That and nostalgia. Will reread sooner than earlier at any rate. This was a middle school book from over fifteen years ago.
