The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
5.0

One word to describe this book: INTENSE.
I loved every minute of it, by far one of my favourite books.
It starts off with our prontagonist in the fringe of the vampire city barely surviving on the scraps of food she can find scavanging the ruins. Then faced with the choice of death or being the very thing that she hates with all her existence: a vampire. She chooses life as a vampire, through the sheer primal need to survive no matter the circumstances.
What I really loved about this novel was that Julie Kagawa didn't try to sugar coat the vampires. She took the overly written and used lore and didn't try to change it. She didn't make them soft or fluffy or sparkly, she took them as they are ment to be persived; dark vicious blood-suckers with no regard for human life. They were the creatures of the night, things nightmares were made of plain and simple.
At the beginning of the book Kagawa made it very clear that these vampires could only live on human blood and only human blood. This made the story dinamic all the more interesting as Allison struggled with the hunger and trying to retain her humanity at the same time.
There was action at every turn of the pages. Gory scenes that thrilled you as you read on. I liked the fact that the author wasn't afraid to kill off her characters unflinchingly.
Kanin, Allison's mentor, was mysterious and dark. I liked the fact that he told her the facts of what it ment to be a vampire with no regard of how she would react to it. He gave the facts to her in black and white, the only thing I would have liked was to see more of him. Hopefully there will be more of Kanin in the next book.
Zeke, the love interest was perfect for Allie. He complimented her character well. In the sence that were she was unsure of herself, he helped her to see herself as more than a monster. I liked the whole forbiden love thing they had going on, and the barriers of beliefs they had to over come. I'm curious to see how they will progress in the next one.
I won't lie I was corcious when reading this, because I've read quite a number of book series that have interpreted the lore so differently, and with all the books about vampires flooding the PNR genre I was sceptical. But Julie put a whole new spin on this and I loved every minute of it. I will count the days untill the second book comes out!
