The Dark by Emma Haughton
3.0

I had extreme difficulty with this book. The premise of scientists trapped on an Antarctic base during the 40 days of night with a murderer among them was too hard to pass up. However, once you get into the story, the bulk of it is based on the main characters heavy drug use. I don't think a page went by where it wasn't mentioned in some way. It also made her viewpoint very unreliable and made it difficult to discern what was going on. That being said, the author's writing style is impeccable. You can feel the cold, the darkness, the isolation. Her intense descriptions transport you right to the base and every character is made real. I was not a fan of this book but will be interested to see what Haughton comes up with next.
