The Anthropocene Reviewed: Essays on a Human-Centered Planet by John Green

4.0

I listened to this on audio, which I would absolutely recommend, as it is narrated by the author. I love learning and there were some many interesting little tidbits here for me to really sink my teeth into.

I think honestly what kept me from giving this 5 stars was thinking about it in the context of our current climate. I actually googled John Green, specifically his response to the genocide happening in Gaza, and to be honest I found it lacking (at least at the time of this review).

With books like this, where someone is philosophising, I feel the need to contextualize how much shit spewing someone is doing. Just because you state something in a published novel does not make it fact. Being privileged enough to have a voice others will listen to does not necessarily mean you have something worth saying or that you know what you are talking about.

Taking into account his response to certain world events and framing the things stated in here against that, I found some of his musings less effective because it seemed like he was talking the talk but wasn’t walking the walk.

No one is perfect, that’s for sure, but if you are in a position like Green where he takes up the mantle of someone knowledgeable and empathetic, maybe you should actually be what you claim to make your points really stick.
