A YA story about loss, grief and self determination. Each character was convincingly unique and human in their actions and words, something I think the author does well. The character of Mathew I ended up liking which was surprising to me. The author made the villain seem a tiny bit human. Sometimes, I think we will often forget that antagonists and villains are fellow humans as well. I would have liked the author to focus more deeply on loss and grief and examine each character's relationship to it at length. Given it is a YA novel I think they did a great job with it on a level equal to their desired audience.
