When You Lose It by Roxy Longworth, Gay Longworth
emotional
hopeful
reflective
I don't feel comfortable rating this since it's someone's real life story but I will say that I enjoyed listening.
I randomly picked this up from my library, intruged by it being written by both mother and daughter, and I'm glad I did. This was written really beautifully, and had me feeling so many different ways for everyone involved. It was not an enjoyable story, it was heartbreaking, and gut wrenching, and at times far too relatable as someone who has seriously struggled, is still struggling, with their mental health, and the relationships with people around me. This young girl, Roxy, seems to have been failed by pretty much every adult around her for a very long time, but I am so glad she is alive to tell her story. I think seeing and hearing things from both perspectives was a great way to write this. It gave a lot of insight into this very messy and complicated relationship, which honestly reminded me of my relationship with my parents, and really highlighted how situations can be so different depending on your perspective and understanding.
I'm not going to lie, it was extremely difficult to read this. Hearing about a child being treated the way she was treated, and go through the kinds of things she has went through was horrible, she deserved so much better. Hearing the toll it took on her parents, particularly her Mum, Gay, was a gut punch at times as it reminded me again of things I put my own mum through. I'm glad Roxy managed to get the help she needed to begin the journey of recovery and I'm glad they managed to use writing this as a way to heal themselves, and their relationships with each other. I truly wish the best for everyone involved.
