Well-Read Black Girl: Finding Our Stories, Discovering Ourselves by Glory Edim

emotional hopeful inspiring reflective fast-paced

This collection of essays centers on how each of these black writers found representation in literature and their own journey of reading. We all have our story of the book that spoke to us when we were young. For some of us, we were toddlers. For others, it may have taken us until our teens or even adulthood to find a text that screams out to you. When the majority of books we see featured on our library shelves or on the best seller’s list are written by white authors writing about white people, many young readers are excluded and are being told that their stories don’t matter. This book highlights those voices that broke free of the mold and these writers who took in into their own hands to write stories of people that looked like them. This is their story.

This was a phenomenal read about the power of the written word. Each story is only a couple of pages long, but they will make you feel everything from frustration and pain to inspiration and celebration. I cannot recommend this enough!
