This was my first Ferguson novel and I absolutely devoured this story. TPMN takes place over the course of one week, and follows 3 teens, Berlin, Cameron, and Jessie, who all work at Pink Mountain Pizza. But with the owner thinking of selling out, Cameron’s cousin gone missing, their lives are upended and they’ll have to rely on each other to push through.
.
The story handles a lot of different plot points and they never felt out of place - everything felt balanced, even if the story is contained within the space of one week. There’s a lot of nuance that Ferguson tackles in her characters as well - from Berlin’s bisexuality, her attraction to a white girl and how it might not be working, Cameron being preyed on by an older woman, Jessie interacting with an indigenous community while also being white and rich, alongside discussing anti-blackness in indigenous communities as well. All the characters were well rounded with so much depth - I felt like I knew these kids.
.
I’ve heard nothing but praise for Ferguson’s debut novel and now I know why - I’m excited to go back and read The Summer of Bitter & Sweet and any future novel of Fergusons too!
.
PS - I want all the pizzas from Pink Mountain - please and thank you 🤤
