The Hole by Hiroko Oyamada

5.0

This is one of those books that I know I will be rereading in time, perhaps more than once, and there will be more and more new things it will say to me. The short novel needs careful and thorough reading. On the surface, it is a collection of observations with little plot or character development. But it is like a high concentrate of meaning - every word and sentence contains depth of emotion and thought that the author is trying to communicate.

It is a wonderful symbol of a novel, made more accessible by its “horror” tint. But instead of jumpscares, it’s more about the hidden horror of everyday life that most of us never really notice.

Succinct, without pretence and frills, but brimming with emotion, it’s a gem of a novel. Something that definitely deserves to be in our bookstore inventory at Saga. (ARC: W. W. Norton/Edelweiss+).
