Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language
by Gretchen McCulloch
4.5 rounded down
I thought this was a super interesting book on internet linguistics which essentially goes into the massive impact the internet has had on the way we communicate. I find language and linguistics fascinating on their own, and being somebody who is old enough to remember the internet becoming mainstream, and young enough (and online enough from an earlyish age) to be quite fluent in the iNteRneTs, this also just resonated on a quite a personal level that added an extra layer of fun. I enjoyed the author's style here--you could tell she loves what she does, and understands and respects the impacts technology has, and will have, on how humans exist and communicate with one another. It was interesting to see her name and expand upon phenomena I've noticed in my 20+ years of being online but never could quite articulate, like the fact that the more mainstream aspects of the internet become, the less technological barriers there tend to be, which can be inexplicably frustrating to us olds (remember when we all knew how to HTML code??). Anyway, thought this was well worth the read.
