Darktown
by Thomas Mullen
Mallon has written a book that is difficult to read because the treatment of African-Americans in Georgia during the earliest days of integration, is enraging and will make any reader (except perhaps a Donald Trump supporter), extremely uncomfortable. The plot and characters are invented, but the fact of discrimination, threats, epithets and violence are a historical fact. While the undercurrent is an ugly racism, the book examines the difficulties of crime, policing and walking a moral high ground in a world which demands compromise. Highly recommended.
