Here With Me by Samantha Young
3.75
Overall rating: 3.75
This was a pretty good romance with suspense, but there were times that I felt like this dragged on longer than it needed to. It was also pretty predictable with the suspense part. However, one thing I really enjoyed about this book was the bit of slow burn the author offered and focused a part of the book on allowing Robyn to come to terms with her trauma about her dad. I felt for her in those moments.
Robyn was a great character. She was unapologetically confident, brave, and kind. She went after what she wanted with no regrets and was a woman of action, not words. She dealt with quite a bit of trauma in this book, after being abandoned and shot at (no this is not a fucking spoiler it literally happens in the first chapter of the book) she reevaluates her life and decides to gain closure on strained relationships and go after what makes her happy. Being 28, the girl felt wiser than most of the people who were older than her, tbh and I loved that she had a plan for herself. Robyn is a very approachable character, and while she maybe a mediocre cop.... 😌 she's someone who fights for the people she loves even if they don't fight for her. So towards the end of the book when she was done with Lachen's (? I think that's how you spell his name) bullshit it was so refreshing to see. LIKE FINALLY A CHARACTER TO IS DONE WITH MMCS MEDIOCRE BEHAVIOR!
Lachen, on the other hand... lowkey... no highkey... that man is a Bitch with a capital B. He was a fucking asshole and nosey af... like bro if you don't get out of Robyn's business omfg... he got better in the second half of the book but omfg he was annoying... AND THEN WHEN I FIND OUT WHY HE ONLY KEPT CASUAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH WOMEN?!?! Bro he a grade A bitch boy. At least he finally grew a pair in the third act and fought for Robyn... cuz that's honestly what my girl Robyn needs! A fighter! (Even if it is a Bitch boy fighter.)
As for the suspense.... uhhhh... well.... let's just say if there was no romance I would've rated this book a lot lower. Having the romance in the middle of the book and the suspense towards the end really threw off the pacing tbh and I feel like if the author chose to switch the two plot points this story would've been a lot better... because there were times that I would be on the lookout for the suspense parts only to see romance... and then when I get into the romance, BAM SUSPENSE! Like girly.... no. I think that's why I felt like there were places in the book where it was dragging because the pacing just seemed very inconsistent to me.... nevertheless, I enjoyed the story.
Overall, this was a pretty good start to a small town romance series, and I can't wait to read Robyn's sisters story! It's apparently has a single dad, which I am a sucker for!
