Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry

2.0

You remember watching Terminator 2 and thinking it was a great movie, but God, could they have given young John Connor worse dialogue? That's a lot like Rot & Ruin. The story idea is very cool and some thought has definitely gone into what the world would look like after a zombie apocalypse, including technology, religion, and crime. Unfortunately, it appears that Jonathan Maberry has not spoken to an actual teenager in years and his characters sound like obnoxious kids from early 90's sitcoms. I would say the world he has created is worth putting up with the bad dialogue, but by the end of the book the story had become very predictable and ultimately annoying. Clearly set up to allow for a sequel, we'll see if it takes off. My guess is that it will come across as false to actual teenagers and even they will be able to tell what's coming next from a mile away.
