This novel hits close to home since I am from the PNW. We hear so much about the upcoming ‘The Big One’. It’s pretty terrifying and most of us are way behind in prep (denial!). I love how the story starts in IKEA-the last place anyone wants to be when a quake hits. We follow a very pregnant, not particularly likable, Annie in journey through a devastated Portland to try to find her husband. On the way she has various encounters with other victims. She forms an intense companionship with a woman she just met who is in route to find her young daughter. It’s also a very reflective journey as Annie talks to her unborn baby ‘Bean’ and takes us through flashbacks of her mother, her career dreams and married life.
The pace of Tilt is non-stop building to what I think is a brilliant climatic ending. Patree’s writing style is straightforward but not unpoetic. She puts you right in the center of the chaos and paints a realistic picture of what one may go through, physically and mentally, in such an emergency - one that is destined to happen at any time.
