The City of Falling Angels by John Berendt
2.0

I wanted to like this better than I did. I love to read about Venice, I enjoyed the map endpapers, and I really liked that our book club tried a non-fiction book.
Berendt pads his narrative of the fire at the Fenice opera house with gossipy portraits of all sorts of folks he encounters in Venice. Parts of it charmed and fascinated me, the glassblower and the rat poison entrepreneur in particular. The parts that read like the society pages made me want to scream. I really have to learn how to skim! And get to Venice myself. The problem with seeing something through someone else's eyes is that the person doesn't always look at what you want to see.
