Network Effect by Martha Wells

4.0

A good novel that improves upon the formula of the novellas. The second half is particularly good, especially with the return of a character that I really liked from the novellas.

That being said, Murderbot needs to renew itself to stay relevant. I think Wells has done a great job with this character and the novel was actually a bit better than I expected, but now I feel that she’s reached the limits of what can be accomplished with that concept as it is.

Of all the Hugo winners that I’ve read, it’s in the lower tier. It is funny and entertaining, but definitely not very deep (even though it tries at times), and I do expect some depth from a Hugo winning novel.

So 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 because for all its faults, I did have a good time reading this book.
