Enduring Love by Ian McEwan

Far back in the mists of ancient time I studied this as part of my AS Level in English Literature, and i can see why. It is a novel that is seemingly made for the intellectual scribblings of teenagers, with its clear mirroring, multiple perspectives and attempt to tackle the issues of science and religion there is plenty to get 1500 word essays out of. It is a profoundly dated book, its discussions of wealthy people eating fancy picnics and musing on the nature of rationality fits very neatly into the New Labour mileu of the late 90s. You felt somehow that after dealing with all their issues the main characters would go and be dinner party guests in a Richard Curtis film. However it is a novel of wonderful moments (its first chapter is up there with Brighton Rock's) and masterful plotting that keeps you reading right to the end, even as you find the whole thing rather smugly wearing its learning too heavily
