O’Tuama is a the man. If you don’t think you “get” poetry, this book provides a beautiful entryway into the craft but also into better understanding what it’s like to be alive (which is what poetry is all about). His essays on each of the poems are just about as beautiful as every one of the poems. I found a lot of great poets I’ve never heard of before and I def was moved to tears more than once. Favourites: Song by Tracy K Smith, Of Course She Looked Back by Natalie Diaz, We Lived Happily During the War by Ilya Kaminski and On Receiving Father at JFK after his Long Flight from Kashmir. My analysis was the one O’Tuama did for Arcelis Girmay’s poem Consider the Hands that Write this Letter.
