Alles umsonst by Walter Kempowski

This book surprised me. It is a slow, character-driven, atmospheric read, providing a really interesting perspective on WW2. Initially I didn't like it, as it seemed to have no plot or development. However about 60% of the way through the book I realised the plot was forming. And while I thought I didn't like the book, turns out I actually cared for the characters a lot. So I suppose this was a good book!
