Did not finish book. Stopped at 78%.
I really wanted to like this book… and the general concept/plot was interesting but I just couldn’t handle the constant text-speak and very early 21st century specific language and references. It felt myself having to suspend disbelief too much to imagine that in a world a century in the future, where supposedly society and completely collapsed (including the internet) and then reformed people would still be saying “feels” and using “friend” as a verb, or making references to Harry Potter and calling Trump “orange Voldemort”. Not to mention the copious #’s and @‘s where they make absolutely no sense.

There was also no real awareness of the underlying systemic issues that are causing climate catastrophe, economic inequality, etc… the world of the novel is one where capitalism still exists and technology become a yoke into which most voluntarily submit but all of the problems of the past are blamed on a few evil/greedy individuals rather than the system that allows/creates them. To be honest I only made it about 80% before giving up so if it somehow this was all just a misdirection and the thesis does a 180 at the end, let me know.

In summary: imagine “Ready Player One” but written by a Liberal (with a capital L) queer white gen-Xer who publicly identifies as a “Slytherin”

Also, they’re locs - not dreads, and definitely not dreadlocks.
