I’ve been on a campaign to whittle out the “noise” from my life, including social media. I heard about Bored and Brilliant on the Note to Self podcast (which I highly recommend) and thought this is the book for me. I was right. I’ll be honest and say I mostly read it for the research and didn’t partake in the activities, since I already started my own process such as deleting my Facebook app from my phone on the weekends or weekdays. It’s amazing how automatic I’ve become to checking my FB account to fill the empty time and how much time it takes away from things I had planned on doing all week . . . only to fall into the black hole of smartphone apps. I like the 360-research approach (because I don’t know what else to call it) where it looks at all aspects (positive/negative) of smartphones Bored and Brilliant doesn’t demonize smartphones, social media, apps, etc. because the fact is that these things are here to stay. It calls for a balance – to take back control and see these “things” as tools rather than as puppet masters. I especially love how the book takes the extra step and acknowledges our problem with “boredom” and how that boredom can be utilized as a tool as well.
