snb1980 's review for:
Vanity Fair
by William Makepeace Thackeray
3.5 stars. 30-hour audio book. There really aren't any heroes in this book, no, not even Dobbin. In my opinion, Becky isn't that bad. The worst thing about Becky is that she's a terrible mother, but she probably never wanted children and had a baby to secure her marriage and soften the Crawley family towards Rawdon. She's a poor woman in a society that limits what she can do without a familial or legal attachment to a man. She is as "bad" as the society that the men built force her to be. I, too, would have hidden money from Rawdon. He was very bad with money. Dobbin is manipulative, and he really goes around manipulating everyone. He omits information and is one of the people that "does so much for others," but I'd 100% doing it for a motive that may cause more harm than good. Everyone else was weak, self-serving, and a bit boring. As an avid reader of historical romances, reading this book really takes some of the tint off of the rose colored glasses. While I'm sure there are plenty of TW to be considered, the one that stood out the most to me was th racism.
