This sci-fi anthology contains five stories. Two novellas and three short stories. All set in the futuristic Orwellian nightmarish dystopian world of Dirty Computer which was the title of Janelle's concept album.
The New Dawn regime is ultra fascist and all-controlling. If you don't conform to all expectations then society labels you a dirty computer and you're at risk of imprisonment and memory wipe.
The stories all centre on those that don't conform. The minorities & LGBTQ community, the creatives & artistic.
New Dawn is insidious, restricting choices and freedom. It's a messed up world and draws inspiration from sci-fi classics and everyday life and ultimately a world where the majority will be labelled as trouble. Being a dirty computer is the right choice in life I feel.
I don't remember reading a book based on a concept album before but it works really well. Janelle is obviously a sci-fi fan and has created an afro-futuristic world with interesting & believable characters. On each story Janelle has collaborated with a different writer. They all bring something different to the project but the stories form a cohesive whole which shows that Janelle's input is crucial and that there's a strong vision behind the concept.
