The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
by Elizabeth O'Roark
Spoiler
This might be an unpopular opinion but this book genuinely disappointed me. I just read the first book in this series with Hayes and Talia, “A Deal with the Devil”, and I absolutely ADORED it!! Drew is Talia’s best friend in the first book and I felt so much more empathic to her life and her situation throughout that book.In this book, Drew just liked to complain. Despite being given multiple opportunities to make her life and situation better, she refused to take them. I’m not saying she didn’t have things to complain about but I can only take so much of people ignoring obvious answers and offers to help themselves.
Josh is the only reason this is getting 3 stars instead of 2 (and he’s honestly on thin ice for that “men are scientifically required to look at breasts” crap) He was incredibly sweet and caring and despite being so far away did his best to be there for her and care for her.
Now, for my biggest gripe with this book: Why was everything solved OFF PAGE??????
Throughout the book, we’re told about the bad management deal Drew is in and she makes a call at the end of the book telling Ben to go through with the case but that’s it. Suddenly, “9 months later”, the case is closed off page. One of the primary sources of conflict throughout this book. The same thing happens with showing their relationship to Josh’s family. They make a big stink about, Josh kisses her in front of everyone, Six has to be held back, “9 months later” he’s okay because his mom told him she’s about to be a part of the family?????
