Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
5.0

This book spoke to the part of me that grew up in the south with all of its beauty and all of its problems. I could hear the voices of my grandmother and aunts in some of the phrases. I remember hearing people talk in the language in this book. I remember the beauty, the sadness and yes the racism.

This book is set as Scout, from To Kill a Mockingbird, is grown and returns home to the south after having been in NY for some time. She returns to the south in a time of desegregation and NAACP rallies in small towns. This describes the time of out of town instigators and in town KKK. It will offend you, if you from the south, the north, if you are white, if you are black, if you are a feminist or if you would never wear that label. It will make you wonder how far we have really come.

Toward the end of the book, Dr. Finch talks about how Scout is a bigot, not because she is racist but because she refuses to listen to any opinion but her own. All others are wrong. Jean Louise, aka Scout, in the end must decide if she wants to stay in the south and be part of the change or run to the north to be away from the problems. It is well written. It will make you think. It will definitely make you laugh. It may may you cry. It will change you.
