This is the sequel to Enclave and while I liked it less than the first one, I do appreciate that this book wasn’t just a bridge for the final book.
I liked most of the developments in this book. Deuce experienced some culture shock as she tried to adjust to her new way of living and I enjoyed seeing how that developed. I loved how she had this new family and I especially loved her relationship Momma Oaks! It was nice to see her have a mom figure in her life since she’s never had one. Also her relationship with Longshot was nice and nice that he didn’t underestimate her like others just cause she’s a woman.
Aside from that though the rest of this book felt pretty meh to me. While the whole freaks thing got a bit more intriguing, the characters fell a bit flat in realizing.
You obviously have Deuce who is “not like other girls cause she can fight” so there’s that. Fade is supposed to be this “soft boy” but his only personality trait is that he’s in love with Deuce. All he thinks about is Deuce and if he’s not, he’s getting jealous of other men for being near her. Then we have Stalker who I guess is supposed to be the other half of this one sided love triangle. He’s like “a bad boy who didn’t know better” who like Fade is just obsessed with Deuce. I think the author wants us to like him despite the fact he’s done some pretty messed up stuff. (Didn’t he rape other girls? Why is he a potential love interest in the first place even though this isn’t going anywhere?) Just seems questionable to have that not only in a YA book, but in books in general.
The only character of the main four that I do find more interesting is Teagan. I find her probably more interesting than the rest of them otherwise most are pretty one dimensional. It was nice seeing how she developed over this book as she settled into her new life.
The love triangle seems pretty pointless to me. It has no substance especially since she has no interest in Stalker. The whole Stalker plot line makes me so mad in general. He keeps trying to pursue her after she’s said no multiple times. Then he pulls “if this is the last time I see you, I deserve a kiss,” crap. Like what even? The most bizarre part is she goes “That seems fair,” which is so bonkers to me. She doesn’t owe him anything. Also he like kissed her without her consent and so out of nowhere at the end. It was weird.
Fade just seemed to lose any semblance of a personality in this book. The only reason we’re really supposed to care is cause he cares about Deuce. The characters just don’t really have any chemistry and while I wouldn’t say I hate them by any means, there’s nothing (not even their near death experiences) to get me to root for them. I just want more substance to their romance.
I don’t know. I’m still considering reading the next one (and I probably will tbh) but also this series has stayed around the 3 star area for me so I’m not sure if it’s really worth it.
