The Chemist
by Stephenie Meyer
I have mixed feelings about this book. First off I loved Twilight (book 1) and The Host but all the other books I am ambivalent towards. I still will read any of Meyer's works because I love how she is still has moments where she enchants and/or surprises me. As far as this book, I applaud Meyer trying new genres and stretching her wings, but I was still left lacking.
The protagonist or "Chemist" was intriguing at first, a cold and scientifically focused medical assassin and torture interrogator. However, the male ultra forgiving and loving Bella-like Daniel Beach with the insta-love was hard to accept. Daniel was portrayed as too perfect and he was too unbelievable. The third protagonist was interesting and I liked the banter and dynamics between this character and the Chemist.
There are great action and several near-death moments. There is a government plot that does make for an interesting finale ending but everything seemed too predictable. There are plenty of twists but again all very predictable. What was very well done were the supporting characters (including dogs).
Overall: Glorified YA trying to reach into adult fiction. Average 3 stars rating.
