The Republic of Pirates: Being the True and Surprising Story of the Caribbean Pirates and the Man Who Brought Them Down by Colin Woodard
4.0
Once again, Our Flag Means Death made me do it. Not only was this informative, it was highly entertaining! There was nothing dry about the writing, and even with this being nonfiction, Woodard managed to achieve a sort of cinematic quality. There's only so much that can be said about Blackbeard, Vane, Bellamy, and the lot without venturing into fiction, and the author balanced that line nicely. If anything, I did find the capturing ships/harassing crew and passengers song and dance to be repetitive. But learning exactly what scurvy can do to the body? The fact that the lives focused on here were as dramatic as a soap opera? Delicious.
