Lord of Chaos by Robert Jordan
4.0

Surprisingly I liked this book better than the last couple ones and the last battle was the best so far in my opinion. It was well described, I didn't get bored as I easily do with them, and it was extremely badass and gruesome.

The female characters seem to be improving a little, but not by much. Still, I have high hopes it keeps getting better (not with Faile it seems, she's too unlikeable at this point).

SpoilerI finally got to enjoy a lot the Aiel customs here, and Egwene embracing them so much. She finally is getting somewhere and has a purpose which is great, she's been wildly underused. Her becoming Amyrlin was a nice twist, but I still think the three Two Rivers girls became Aes Sedai too easily, especially after reading New Spring and understanding how hard the test actually is.

I also LOVED the scene where Nynaeve accidentally heals Logain, it read like a movie, and I certainly stopped breathing when they both realized what happened.

I also finally got to enjoy Rand as a character and his conversations with Lews Therin were terrifying and fascinating at the same time. And him creating the Black Tower with Asha'man is just great and sets up so many things. Really hope Jordan will not toss him aside for a book or two, I mean it happened before.

Aes Sedai are just the worst in this book, on both sides - White Tower and the rebels. Alanna bonding Rand without consent and all of them torturing Rand and Min was all terrible and their "reward" for this felt so satisfying. The ending with Aes Sedai swearing fealty to Rand and Moghedien and Logain escaping were top notch, can't wait to see how that plays out.

I still have trouble remembering all the Aes Sedai, there are too many at this point, I think somewhere around 40 or 50 that appeared a couple of times and are relevant somehow to the story. I finally managed to remember all the Forsaken though (the ones that are alive at this point), but I still don't remember all the Black Ajah that were mentioned and when I tried to google something about them I gave myself a huge spoiler and now I'm just mad.

Everything that partakes to love and relationships is pretty bad as usual, from the lack of consent of both parties to just happening too fast without anything to base it on. I usually don't care about love stories in books, but it seems like an essential part of the story here but I just don't buy it.

Will probably keep this at 4 stars. The book felt like a slog at times, I really think that the entire series could have benefitted from being edited. More than 300 pages were plain repetitions from other books or just completely useless information.
