The Dangerous Billionaire by Jackie Ashenden

Jackie Ashenden first got on my radar via Twitter. She has a decent size library of work and so I’m not sure how I missed her before, but I couldn’t pass her over when some of my favorite authors were recommending her books on Twitter. Initially, months ago, I had wanted to read Sin For Me from her Motor City Royals series when it came out. But I realized it was book 3 of the series and I’m not sure why I didn’t get around to reading book 1 of that series. After all, I’m a (metro) Detroit girl and the series takes place here. Whatever the reasons, this ended up my first book by this author.
There’s always a chance of getting things turning icky when the hero and heroine of a story are somehow related…even if it’s not by blood. In this case, there was also quite an age difference factored into the mix. But Ms. Ashenden pulled it off. Of course, it helps that the characters never really spent a lot of time together in their formative years. But I also like the fact that at the end (I don’t think this is a spoiler, don’t worry) their brothers are still disapproving. I’m sure as the series goes on that will change. I appreciated that the author kept things that way knowing that in real life it would most likely be that way.
Often there are issues that pop out to me in military books, and there were a few little things here. But it seems to me that the author did her homework, for the most part, when it came to how the brothers are addressed (soldier/sailor/SEAL) and how things work. Of course, some liberties were taken and, in this case, I will chalk it up to making slight changes for the sake of moving the story along.
Although Van is quite the alpha male, I love that he acknowledges Chloe’s hold over him. That even with all of his specialized training in the military she can still bring him to his knees. And on the flip of that, it’s wonderful how Chloe never backs down even when Van is angry and seems intimidating. She knows he will never hurt her so it gives her the freedom to speak her mind and fight for what she wants and believes is right.
The spark between Chloe and Van is hot. Once they give into their desires it’s even hotter. On top of that, there is a sweetness between them, an understanding of each other they don’t get anywhere else. Not even from the other brothers.
