The High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Martel

5.0

This book was beautifully written, very entertaining, and at times, mesmerizing. Magical, but deep. The stories were very funny at times, and at others, shocking. Martel's writing is rich in symbolism and creates vivid pictures. On a deeper level, Martel makes you think about the big questions of life: the nature of humanity, the purpose of life, our relationship to the animal kingdom, faith and hope. It's amazing because he gets you thinking by the telling of a story, that at many points, is absurd and silly. This story will stick with me for a long time.
