The Reach Between Worlds
by Cameron M. Hayden
This book was all right. Not great, but not bad. I think I'm tired of the magic school setup, so it's likely this book just wasn't for me. The world-building was interesting and I liked that the characters weren't strictly good or bad in their morality. However, quite a few things happened purely to move the plot along (random sorcerer helping out main character when they just met) while other things didn't make much sense (main character is tasked with getting into magic school, but is not given a means to do it, nor any tuition money). The plot moved so quickly sometimes it never stopped to breathe and focus on how characters were feeling. It never felt like characters were in danger because they would be in an awful situation or horribly injured, but then it would get resolved two paragraphs later - no big deal. It was a good story overall, just not my thing.
Read it if: you enjoy magic schools, a not-so-common magic system, and morally gray characters.
