Holy moly, what a book. I admire a unique magic system with tangible objects, with clever characters, with beautiful world building. This book is visual and rhythmic—the story is perfectly paced and has no problem keeping your attention no matter the scene. If you want to get lost in an epic world, in an epic adventure, this is the book for you.

If you read close enough, the ending is predictable, but in no way does it rob the story of its impact.

Lastly, I want to point out the romance in this book—how it’s woven so cohesively into the story, like the most ardent of braids, if only because each twist and turn of the plaits is excruciatingly satisfying. Gillig should teach a masterclass in yearning, because holy hell. No spoilers, but just know “holy hell” covers it perfectly.
