This story is rife with lush, emotional, and captivating prose. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that it has a very strong sense of place. In a way that no other novel I’ve read compares. Moreover, I loved the way Washburn tied the land to his characters. The tie to one’s culture and homeland is one that is very nuanced, especially for those like myself who are second-gen, third-gen, etc., so it’s very interesting to see Washburn play with that. This book was especially hardhitting for me as I know very well the painful web of love, anger, jealousy, and guilt that accompanies sibling relationships. That feeling of never catching up to the golden child. Watching your other sibling become the forgotten one. Realizing too late that your golden sibling was more than just golden. Anyways. Loved this book. Would suggest picking this book up if you also have a complicated family lol.
