Just as You Are
by Camille Kellogg
October 2023. This was my last Sapphic September read, I finished it on October 1, and forgot to post because in my head it was a September read!
Absolutely loved this modern Pride & Prejudice with butch lesbians! It’s fairly uncommon to get truly butch leading ladies (mostly just a side character for a man in an action movie who doesn’t get an arc), and even rarer for it to be two butch ladies in a romance! I was so here for reading about all of Daria Fitzwilliams’ tailored suits (modern butch lesbian Darcy)
The financial conflict over Bingley and Darcy buying a failing queer magazine Elizabeth and her friends work at is a great way to keep an element of class difference and financial conflict that works in a modern setting. Having everyone as friends and roommates works well for the intimacy and clashing personalities, without the elements from the original that wouldn’t translate to a modern setting.
Definitely recommend for fans of stories based on Pride and Prejudice, fans of queer romance, those looking butch women in their romances. Definitely looking forward to more by this author!
